A Weekend of Wild Weather & Unshakable Spirit
Mother Nature kept us guessing this year. In the weeks leading up to race day we endured a roller‑coaster of cold snaps, heavy rain, and even a tornado watch while volunteers were stringing cable, placing buoys, and setting up the beach. Historically our lake hovers between 78 – 82 °F; this year it plunged to a brisk 65 °F, making the race “wetsuit‑legal” for the first time ever and forcing an overnight rewrite of our safety protocols.
Despite plumbing hiccups at the park and a field almost double last year’s size, the sun broke through on Saturday morning and delivered postcard‑perfect skies. Swimmers did what swimmers do best—adapt, persevere, and find joy in the challenge.
Milestone Swims
-
Shirley Loftus‑Charley notched her 40th Chris Greene start—an achievement that spans nearly the entire history of the event.
-
Dr. John Post completed swim number 25, continuing a quarter‑century tradition of leading by example.
If you know of other multi‑decade participants, drop us a line; we’d love to celebrate every legacy swimmer who helped build this race.

Thank‑You Volunteers
Behind the scenes it still felt like a chaotic roller‑coaster, but our event ran smoothly thanks to an army of dedicated helpers:
-
Volunteers: From course setup to packet pick‑up and timing, your long hours and steady hands made the magic happen.
-
Lifeguards & Safety Crew: A special salute to the teams from Piedmont Family YMCA and Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad whose watchful eyes kept every swimmer safe in unusually chilly water.
-
Race Directors: Your tireless planning, mid‑week protocol rewrites, and on‑the‑fly adjustments staged one of the most successful Chris Greene races to date. We appreciate your leadership more than words can say.
