The John Shrum Chris Greene Lake Swim brings Masters swimmers to one of the most unique open water race courses in the country: a surveyed 1/4-mile cable course set in the calm waters of Chris Greene Lake just north of Charlottesville, Virginia.
Swimmers may compete in the 1-mile cable swim, the 2-mile cable swim, or both events. With a straight, clearly marked course, wave starts, strong safety support, and a long history of national-level competition, Chris Greene is a great event for experienced open water swimmers and first-time open water racers alike.

Why Swim Chris Greene?
The Chris Greene Lake course is different from most open water swims. Instead of navigating a large loop or point-to-point course, swimmers race along a straight 1/4-mile cable marked with frequent buoys. The result is a measured, highly visible course that feels closer to swimming along a long outdoor lane line than guessing your way through open water.
That makes the event fast, fair, and beginner-friendly. It also makes it one of the few open water formats where swimmers can compare performances from year to year with real confidence.
Whether you are chasing a national record, returning for another year, or trying your first open water event, Chris Greene offers a rare mix of competition, tradition, safety, and community.
Volunteers Keep This Event Moving
This swim depends on volunteers. From Friday setup to race-day registration, timing, finish support, kayaking, food, cleanup, and general logistics, volunteers help create a safe and well-run event for every swimmer.
No experience is needed for many roles. If you can help, we will find a place for you.
